As co-founder of The Geeky Girls and winner of Inman News 2013 People’s Choice Innovator Award, Laurie Weston Davis knows about being a successful real estate professional at the cutting edge of technology and social media.
But all the transaction numbers and accolades aren’t what make Davis a successful Cincinnati Realtor®; hard work and who you surround yourself with make you a success.”The five people you interact with most have a huge effect on you. Surround yourself with people who encourage, inspire and push you to be better every day,” Davis says.
Hard work pays off.
Davis wasn’t always an award-winning real estate agent — for most of her adult life she has been an stay-at-home mom. But as she neared the “empty nest” stage of her life, she was looking for a new challenge.
That’s what attracted her to the real estate industry.
“Real estate seemed like a good idea. It gave me the flexibility to balance time with my family.” As half of the popular tech education duo, The Geeky Girls, she has found the perfect business partner and friend in Lisa Archer.
She credits Archer, alongside “unofficial coach” and good friend Ben Kinney, with not only challenging her to be better every day, but also providing inspiration in her career.
The perfect storm
“We’ve been called ‘the perfect storm’ as The Geeky Girls. Now that we’ve joined forces in real estate, you’d better watch out,” Lisa Archer says of her partner.
Davis attributes her growth and success directly from her hard work and building authentic relationships.
She attends two to three meetings per day (team, office and/or virtual chats), which encourages the strengthening of great relationships with all parties surrounding her business.
Google+ Hangouts and GoToMeeting allow her to stay in contact with business partners that are too distant to meet with in person on a regular basis.
Laura Monroe, Director of Social Media for Inman News, is one of those people Davis has built a great relationship with. “I’ve known Laurie Davis, first as a Geeky Girl, fellow Inman Ambassador, an Inman Innovator, and am now proud to call her a friend. If there is one thing I’ve learned in my years of knowing Laurie, never under estimate her amazing wealth of knowledge, business acumen, generosity, and her love of pink and all things Geeky!”
Don’t “do” social, “be” social
Davis maintains that social media is also an amazing way to build and maintain relationships and deliver ROI to her business.
She posts on multiple Twitter accounts (including the renowned @TheGeekyGirls, @LiveLovePinehurst and @lauriewdavis) 20 – 30 times per day, adding status updates to her personal Facebook timeline a few times per day and once a day on each Facebook page she manages.
But the key to online relationships is going one step further; Laurie calls it the “5-5-5″ method: Like 5 posts, post 5 comments and post a personal message on 5 friends’ timelines.
This is one of many strategies which position her well on her own playing field.
Laurie’s modest advice to new agents: “Carefully choose the people you surround yourself in business and life. Remove the negative influences that drag you down. It will make a difference.”
Hard to argue with these words of wisdom.
