About 45 miles from Cincinnati are two little towns, Augusta Kentucky and Higginsport, Ohio, on opposite sides of the Ohio River. If you are looking for small towns within easy distance of the big city, you might enjoy checking out the area.
Higginsport, Ohio – Sleepy Comfort
Higginsport, Ohio has about 250 people in the town. Home prices are very reasonable, with a median of $70,200. It is a tidy little town with a lovely park at the center. Homes are on large lots that lend a very spacious feel to the town. Schools are run by the Ripley Union Lewis Huntington School District
If you like to boat, the White Oak Creek Marina is just down the road. Higginsport is also just twenty-four miles from East Fork State Park. Here you can boat, fish, hunt, picnic, and swim. There are also miles of trails that are open to hikers, backpackers and horse riders. Trails range in length from 0.5 miles to 32 miles. When weather conditions permit, you can sled, ice skate and ice fish, and cross country ski.
Boude’s Augusta Ferry
From Higginsport, catch the oldest ferry still in operation on the Ohio River. The ferry has crossed the Ohio since 1797. The ferries themselves are updated! On the opposite side of the river, the ferry lands in Augusta, Kentucky.
Augusta, Kentucky – Old Southern Elegance
Kentucky’s famous historian, Thomas Clark, named Augusta as one of eleven places that helped to shape the state. It is a beautiful town with very old buildings, quaint homes, and land for sale. There are also very nice modern homes with terrific views. The median home price is $75,600. With just over 1,000 people in the town, you’ll enjoy small town life with big city amenities not far away.
The Augusta Independent School District runs the schools. It is a unique setup as all children from pre-K to 12th grade are in the same building. They have an impressive 100% graduation rate with a 95% attendance rate.
Augusta, Kentucky is home to the Rosemary Clooney House. She chose Augusta in 1980 as her retreat from the world. It is now a museum dedicated to Clooney’s long career as a singer and actor.
There are also many other places of interest including historical homes, a Civil War battle field and gun foundry, and Underground Railroad stops.
Augusta offers a regular schedule of special events including the Augusta Heritage Days, Augusta Riverfest Regatta, Swingtime on the River and more.
