Fort Thomas, Kentucky has a long military history from 1749 when Cherokees fought Shawnees and Miami in a fierce three-day battle. During the Civil War, the future Fort Thomas was part of the Cincinnati Defense Perimeter. You can still see trenches along hilltops in the area.
In 1887, General Sherman surveyed the area as a place to move Newport Post, a location that was continually flooding. Sheridan called the Highlands the “West Point of the West.” He then named the fort after Civil War General George Henry Thomas.
