As the weather gets colder, you may be dreaming of the tropics. While you may not be able to fly off, you can visit the tropics, a desert, and enjoy the beauty of orchids – all in Cincinnati. The Irwin M Krohn Conservatory is your ticket to warmth and gorgeous plants.
About the Krohn Conservatory
The Krohn is located in Eden Park. This park is 186 acres of parkland and museums. The Krohn Conservatory was built in 1933 in the lavish Art Deco style. It is beautiful inside and out. It is homes to more than 3,500 plant species. There are six different collections, each with its own mini-ecosystem.
Bonsai Collection offers a collection of miniature, shaped trees first developed in Japan.
Desert Garden will introduce you to succulents and cacti from deserts worldwide.
Palm House includes palms, a 20’ tall waterfall and goldfish stream. Here you can encounter stunningly beautiful orchids.
Tropical House includes plants from rainforests around the world. They’ve also included economically important plants including a cacao tree.
Orchid Display is a rotating display of orchids as they bloom. As the Krohn has 1000s of orchids, the display is always changing.
The Floral Display is home to a permanent citrus collection but also hosts six seasonal flower shows.
More than Plants
It’s not just plants at the Krohn. From March to June, check out the Butterfly Show. Thousands of butterflies flutter about, enjoying a specially themed garden.
From November 18 to January 7, visit the conservatory for the Cincinnati Choo Choo. Many holiday plants like poinsettias, evergreens, cyclamen, and amaryllis will be in full bloom. Enjoy a model train, created by Applied Imagination. The trains run around and through the plants and the building.
