Come ye, lords and ladies, to visit Loveland Castle. Built as a labor of love by Harry Andrews, a local Loveland Ohio resident, this castle is located on the banks of the Little Miami River. Andrews began building the castle in 1924. It was a place for his “Knights of the Golden Trail” to live and play. The Knights of the Golden Trail are men of high ideals. Their manly purity would save mankind from degradation. After Andrews’ death in 1981, the Knights of the Golden Trail took over the building and run it as a unique and unexpected destination.
Harry Andrews singlehandedly built the castle. He used 2,600 sacks of cement poured into 32,000 milk cartons. The milk carton bricks, 54,000 gallons buckets filled with dirt and 56,000 pails of stone went into the construction. In fine medieval tradition, the front door is made of wood three layers thick and studded with 2,530 nails. It will keep anyone from chopping through it with an ax.
Andrews also flattened the surrounding land for a garden and orchard. He put in a drainage system, built a wall and moat and a dungeon. You’ll find information about Harry Andrews and about the three styles of architecture he used for his castle. There is an excellent collection of period weaponry on display. Enjoy a picnic on the grounds, play games and put together puzzles and search for ghosts.
Loveland is located 30 miles from downtown Cincinnati, but is hardly a medieval town. Instead, you will find a beautiful city known as the Sweetheart of Ohio. The community is booming and proudly boasts of outstanding schools, parks, a vibrant arts and culture scene as well as the nationally recognized Little Miami Bike Trail. This bike trail is 73 miles long and travels through two state parks.
