It is a short drive from Cincinnati to Oxford Ohio, only about 40 miles. It’s a town worth exploring. Oxford Ohio is home to Miami University, one of the leading universities in the nation. Like all university towns, there is a lot to do. Oxford itself is not particularly large – only 21,371 residents.
The town was established when the university was founded. Education has always been important to the town. In fact, the leading text books of the 1800s and early 1900s, the McGuffey Readers, were written by a Miami University professor.
Oxford Ohio boasts many recreational activities from skate and iceskate parks, a diving well, a bark park, and hiking trails. If you want a lovely place for a picnic, check out the stunningly beautiful Dogwood Park and Formal Gardens.
You’ll also find a lot of history in the area. Take self-guided walks around the uptown, the university and the former Western College for Women area. Check out the Black Covered Bridge or visit some original homesteads. You can also take the Presidential Byway Tour and trace the lives of William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison.
If museums are your passion, there are several. Discover art at the Miami Art Museum and learn more about McGuffey Readers and their author. You can also learn about natural history and geology at two on-campus museums.
US World and News Report ranks Miami University as #79 (tie) in the nation and #30 (tie) for Top Public Schools. Miami University’s main campus is spread across 2,138 acres. It boasts three satellite campuses in Ohio and one in Luxembourg. Founded in 1809, it is Ohio’s second oldest liberal arts educational institution.
